Washington's New Jersey Battle Plans, 1776-77

Plan of the operations of General Washington against the King's troops in New Jersey. The Battle of Trenton took place on December 26, 1776 after General Washington's crossing of the Delaware River. The hazardous crossing in adverse weather made it possible for Washington to lead the main body of the Continental Army against Hessian soldiers garrisoned at Trenton. After a brief battle, nearly the entire Hessian force was captured, with negligible losses to the Americans. The battle significantly boosted the Continental Army's flagging morale, and inspired re-enlistments. The Battle of the Assunpink Creek was a battle between American and British troops that took place on January 2, 1777 and resulted in an American victory. Burgoyne lost 1,000 men in the two battles, leaving him outnumbered by roughly 3 to 1; American losses came to about 500 killed and wounded. Burgoyne had lost several of his most effective leaders, his attempts to capture the American position had failed, and his forward line was now breached.
