The runway at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla, Nepal

Since it opened in the 1960s the airport at Lukla, renamed Tenzing-Hillary Airport in 2008, has become the usual starting point for expeditions into the Everest region of Nepal. Built into the side of a hill with a steeply sloping runway, it is accessible only to STOL aircraft and helicopters and has a reputation for being amongst the most dangerous in the world.
