I waited in vain for the mist to clear, but was at length obliged to retrace my steps to the lanko, which I did slowly, collecting plants by the Fig. ^2. PROFILE OF SUPPOSED FEMALE MA^AS TJAPING. It was near sunset, and the cicadas, here of several species and extraordinarily numerous, simply deafened us with their piercing and discordant stridulations, it being at this hour that they com- mence their love songs.
