Coloured transmisson electron micrograph of the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae. This type of rod- shaped, Gram-negative bacteria causes pneumonia in humans, which is characterized by multiple cavitation of the lung. It is the second most common cause of urinary tract infections and is found in wound or other infections. Species of Klebsiella possess a polysaccharide capsule (seen here) by means of which they are divided into various types. Klebsiellae are widely found in nature, also occurring harmlessly in the human intestines. K. pneumoniae was formerly known as Friedlander's Bacillus. Magnification x43,200 at size.
