The rubble of detroyed homes at dusk resemble ancient ruins in the Shor (Shur) Bazar section of the old city of Kabul, Afghanistan. Located below the ancient fort of Bala Hissar and the old city walls, this part of Kabul, and others, were almost completely destroyed in the mid 1990's (1992-1996) in factional fighting between rival mujahideen commanders for control of the capital after the Soviet's withdrawal. Further destruction was inflicted when the Taliban took Kabul in 1996, and when the USA- backed Northern Alliance re-took Kabul in 2001.
