Artificial soft paste porcelain : France, Italy, Spain and England . eces we have ex-amined are poorly potted, and the under sides are often rough andbadly finished. Characteristics: A glassy glaze of creamy white, thickly of grease spots in the paste. Poor potting and indifferentfinish. CHELSEA. The earliest true frit paste porcelain of English manufacture wasprobably produced at Chelsea, and several examples of the goatand bee pattern bearing the date of 1745 are known. These pieceswere for many years attributed by collectors to the Bow factory, butrecently several have come to light which in addition to the trianglemark have the name Chelsea scratched in the paste. It wouldtherefore appear that porcelain of fine quality was produced here inthe year above mentioned, and it is highly probable that the factoryhad then been in existence for several years. Mr. M. L. Solon, in hisBrief History oj Old English Porcelain, states that Charles Gouynwas the first head of the Chelsea concern. In 1749 Nicholas Sprimontbecame director of the No. 05-230. 30. Frit Paste Goat and Bee Jug.(4i inches in height).Polychrome , England, about 1745.
