The Artificial Lake of Wadi Al Rayyan
The artificial lake of Wadi Al Rayyan and it environs; Egypt’s central government, in an attempt to redistribute population so as to make it more evenly spread over the country, diverts water from the Nile to other, more arid parts of the country. This particular area is located in the Fayoum governorate, some 140 km south west of Cairo. The name Al Rayyan literally means “The one whose thirst was quenched”.
