Medieval Sanctuary Door Knocker on the main door of Durham Cathedral

The Sanctuary Knocker on the main entrance door of Durham Cathedral provided an opportunity for refuge to criminals in Medieval history. By rapping on the knocker they would be given 37 days of sanctuary inside the Cathedral safe from their pursuers. For many this would be enough time to decide to face up to their crimes and punishment or plan an escape. The current knocker on the door is a replica of the original. The cathedral dates from 1093 AD, and is one of the best examples of Norman architecture. It has UNESCO World Heritage Status.
