Fort Santiago was built in the early 1600s to protect the town of Portobelo, Panama, as a shipping point for Spanish treasure. The harbor was protected by five Spanish forts. Portobelo was discovered and named by Christopher Columbus in 1502. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
