C. 98 KINROSS-SHIRE 5. Natural History. Two-thirds of the county is under cultivation, withoats as the chief crop. Where the July temperature isbelow 56° F. and the rainfall exceeds 34 inches perannum, wheat ceases to be a regular crop; and as theJuly temperature of this shire is but slightly above thisminimum and the rainfall is certainly greater than34 inches, practically no wheat is sown. Cultivation infavourable localities on the southern slopes of the Ochilsmay be carried up to the 1000-feet contour line; butmore generally the cultivated area passes about the 800-feet level into the zone of hill pasture.
