Whenthe attackingforce hadgained theedge of the ditch, the Union troops themselves slack-ened fire, as if overcome by the heroism which theycould not subdue. The pause, however, was onlymomentary; and when the guns once more openedat short range, the Confederates for the first timefaltered, and reeled back.
