St Johns Gate Colchester

The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1096 and finally destroyed, except for this 15th Century gatehouse, during the reformation in c1539. The damage from cannonballs fired during 1648, the Siege of Colchester, is still evident in the vaulted roof.
