Grotto Geyser, Yellowstone NP, 1905
Grotto Geyser photographed by Detroit Publishing Company, 1905 . Grotto Geyser is a fountain-type geyser located in the Upper Geyser Basin. On September 18, 1870 members of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition entered the Upper Geyser Basin where in a day and a half of exploration, they named seven geysers of which Grotto was one. It is the namesake for the group of geysers that includes Grotto Fountain Geyser, South Grotto Fountain Geyser, Indicator Spring, Spa Geyser, and Rocket Geyser. Yellowstone National Park is a national park located primarily in the state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872.
