Varieties.—Operations for defects of the roof of themouth may be divided as follows:.. Fig. 151.—Cleft Alveolar Process. (1) Uranoplasty, or upon the soft palate. (2) For cleft alveolar process. (3) For complete defects of the hard palate. (4) For unilateral cleft palate. (1) Uranoplasty.—Under the first head, where the de-fect does not reach the hard palate, two methods of opera-tion are practiced: (a) The margin of the tissue may be OPERATIONS 323 split from apex of cleft to the tip of the uvula. The supe-rior and inferior flaps readily unfold, leaving sufficientraw surface for adjustment, (b) The edges may be paredby using a Langenbeck or Goodwillie bistoury. Suturing may be done with horsehair, silkworm gut, or30-day chromicized catgut. Eepair usually follows when
