Many large sailing ships are moored by thebank, their masts and cordage forming a delicate fret workagainst the sky, and in the distance the buildings and spiresof the town stretch across the picture. The time is evening,the sun has just set and the touch of his last rays flecks thewater with crimson and casts a roseate glow over the thinmantle of grey cloud which covers the sky. On the grass at their roots sits a young womanwith a naked babe upon her knee, and another older childseated before her, offering her some fruit plucked from thetrees. The mother wears only a loose dress of violet hue,drawn off her right shoulder and revealing the soft curve ofher bust as she offers her breast to the babe. Her auburn hairis gathered loosely behind her neck and falls below hershoulders. Her left hand caresses a dog and a cradle of rushesis on the ground at her feet. Beyond the river the ground islaid out in lawns and walks and the houses appear with whitewalls and red roofs shining brigh
