It took place in and around Gettys-burg, a town located only about tenmiles north of Emmittsburg, themother house of the Sisters of Char-ity. The Union army was under thecontrol of General George , and the Confederate forcesunder General Robert E. Lee. Over140,000 men were engaged in thatbloody struggle, which lasted until theevening of the third day. The contending armies by theirmovements advanced more and more toward the Sistershouse in Maryland. The scene of this historic battlecovered an area of over twenty-five square miles. Thesoldiers were so close to the Sisters house that the build-ings trembled from the fearful cannonading. (132). GETTYSBURG. 133 On tlie morning of July 1, as the head of the OneHundred and Seventh Kegiment, Pennsylvania Volun-teers, Second Division, First (Reynolds) Corps was ap-proaching St. Josephs Academy near Emmittsburg thesoldiers were greeted with a remarkable and impressivesight A long line of young girls led by several Sisters ofCharity took their position along the side of the road andat a word from the Sister m charge all fell upon theirknees and with upturned faces toward the vaulted skiesearnestly prayed for the spiritual and physical safety ofthe men who were about to go into deadly battle. Thesight was at once solemn and inspiring in the roughest soldiers ofttimes have the tenderest hearts, and this scene affected them more than they cared toconfess. In an instant the head of every soldier in theline was bowed and bared, and remained so until theprayer was finished
