Beckley, West Virginia - Retired coal miner Jack Turner leads visitors on a tour of the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. The low-seam coal mine operated during the first half of the 20th century as the Phillips-Sprague Mine. Turner demonstrates a carbide lamp that early miners would use. In the lamp, calcium carbide reacts with water to produce acetylene, which burns with a strong flame.
