View ESE of the pre-Conquest round tower & Church of St Mary the Virgin, Bessingham, Norfolk, England, UK. The Saxon tower may have been built initially as a freestanding defensive structure & lookout in a dominant position, perhaps as early as 851 & consists of at least two building phases with different window styles. The tower is one of the oldest in Norfolk, possibly as early as AD 851. The church itself dates from around 1050, much of the nave is C11th but the present chancel is largely C15th. The church is built of local carstone given the nickname in Norfolk of 'gingerbread stone'. It was extensively restored in 1869.
