Prisoner in chains, bent at the knees under the weight of his heavy burden. Medieval Romanesque stone caryatid, helping to support the tympanum over the west portal of the Église Sainte-Marie in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.

Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: Romanesque medieval stone caryatid helping to hold up the weighty Romanesque tympanum over the west portal of Oloron’s former cathedral, now the Église Sainte-Marie (Church of St. Mary). The captive is one of a pair of carved caryatids: two shackled prisoners, chained together at the waist. They survived a devastating fire in the late 11th century.
