All day the miner works in that strange, dark place, awayunder ground—no sunshine, no light but the little twinklinglights of the lamps that the other miners carry. At night hegets into the big iron basket again, and goes up, up, up, as if inan elevator, to the top of the shaft again, and steps out upon theground and into the fresh air once more. How much he must enjoy his Sundays and holidays, when hecan see tne sunshine, and the sky, and all such beautiful things,instead of being in the black darkness of the mine !.
