Base Ball was played at Yale as early as 1859. At that time, however, it was ina very crude state of development, and had not become an institution in the the six years following its introduction, the interest in the game was fluctuatingand uncertain. In fact, for want of suitable grounds, in the year i860, the sport wasrelinquished altogether. From references to base ball found in various college publica-tions, we learn that the most important matches were played between class nines, andthat it was not until the fall of 65, that a University nine was formed.
