Measles encephalitis. Transmission electron micro- graph of a cell nucleus from human brain with encephalitis (inflammation) caused by the measles virus. Viruses take over the metabolism of the cells they infect in order to manufacture new virus particles. Here, the cell nucleus (right) is full of newly-manufactured viral nucleocapsid, stained with gold-labelled measles virus antibody (black dots). The nucleocapsid of a virus consists of its genetic material with a coating of protein. This is packed into a lipoprotein envelope, budded off from the host cell membrane, to form an intact virus. Magnification: x63,700 at 8x6 inch size.
