Grey sky view, to wall photograph Conrad Schumann, entrance to Bernauer Strasse subway station, Brunnenstrasse, Berlin \Wall
A nearby information signs reads: 'The Bernauer Strasse subway station became a deserted ghost station after the Wall was built. The trains that passed beneath East Berlin's city centre, travelling from one end of West Berlin to the other, did not stop here anymore. The station exit leading into West Berlin had already been closed by August 13 (1961) and was walled up on September 28. In August 1965 the other entrance was also walled up, the subway signs were dismantled and the entrance area was levelled. The subway station re-opened in April 1990.' The background wall illustrates an iconic photograph from the Bonn Peace Forum showing East German border guard, 19-year old Conrad Schumann, jumping the first barbed wire border fence, August 15, 1961.
