Solar surface drawing, made from observations on 7th June 1878. This drawing was published in the French journal Annales de l'Observatoire Physique de Paris. It shows the mottled surface of the Sun, a phenomenon known as solar granulation. Telescopic observations of the Sun began in 1610, but it was not until more powerful telescopes were available that detailed surface structures like this could be observed.
