An anteroom to the Earls Bedroom in Haddon Hall, an 11th century English country house, on the River Wye near Bakewell, Derbyshire, formerly the seat of the Dukes of Rutland. Four centuries after the Vernon family acquired the Manor of Haddon, Dorothy Vernon, the daughter and heiress of Sir George Vernon, married John Manners, the second son of Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland in 1563. A legend grewin the 19th century that Dorothy and Manners eloped, a story that's been made into novels, dramatisations and other works of fiction.
