Asearly as 1693, the college of William and Mary wasfounded; Washington and Lee University in 1749;Hampden .Sidney in 1775, and University of Vir-ginia in L825. The state has always taken com-mendable interest in education. The plantationswere so large and the population so scattered as torender impracticable the common school system. still fill a large place in the American department ofthis volume, so prominent was it in Colonial andRevolutionary days, and during the first century ofthe Republic. From 1607, when the first perma-nent English settlement was made on Americansoil upon the banks of the James River, until theclose of the war between the North and the South,nearly two hundred and sixty years later, Virginiawas almost constantly at the front. Since that timeit has not been specially prominent, except as madeconspicuous in politics by the Readjusters, led bySenator Mahone, who is urged forward in the hope of the North, but as the land is being divided, andthe negroes are now a part of the people, publicschools are beginning to flourish. The state containssome coal and iron. The soil is generally good, andthe climate mild. Tobacco has always been theleading staple of the state.
