Impetigo infection on the lips and side of the mouth of a patient. Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. The infection starts as a red patch and develops into small pustules that merge to form a yellow, crusty sore. Impetigo can spread outwards with central healing as on the side of the mouth. This is a gyrate pattern of infection, other forms are annular (round) or circinate (ring-shaped). Patients must not share items like towels that touch the affected area, as this will spread the disease. Antibiotic drugs should heal the infection.
