Supermarket jars of coffee for sale; Variety of Coffees for sale on supermarket shelf. Lancashire, UK

Much of the coffee on the shelves in US supermarkets is either Arabica or a blend of Arabica and Robusto beans. In particular, blends marketed as “espresso blends” or “made for espresso” tend to be a mix as Robusta beans tend to make a more pleasing crema in espresso. Robusta beans are stronger, more bitter, and have more caffeine. They’re also significantly easier to grow (they’re robust!) as well as being significantly less expensive than their smaller, sweeter brethren. I understand that they also tend to be more shelf-stable, meaning they keep their flavor longer after being exposed to oxygen, whereas Arabica beans tend to peak 24 hours to a few days after roasting, then decline in flavor as they age. As a general rule, the less expensive a coffee blend is, the higher your chances of having a Robusta blend.
