Radioactivity analysis. Researcher using a Geiger counter to measure the radioactivity levels of a plant in an area of countryside. Part of the Geiger counter is a tube filled with low pressure gas. As radiation passes through the tube it ionises (charges) the gas particles. The number of charged particles and hence the radiation level is recorded on a dial (not seen here). This work seen here is being carried out by the French government agency, l'Institut de Protection et de Secrete Nucleaire (IPSN). Photographed in France.
