Astrocyte nerve cell. Confocal light micrograph of an astrocyte nerve cell. The cell cytoskeleton has been dyed green. The cytoskeleton is responsible for intracellular transport, cell structure and motility. Astrocytes are a type of glial cell. They provide structural support and protection for neurons (nerve cells) and also supply them with nutrients and oxygen. The cells cannot transmit electrical signals and so insulate neurons from one another.
