If the rate of P32 uptake is plotted against the time after fertilization when DNP is applied, the time course of the inhibition can be clearly seen (Fig. 6). The maximum inhibition is associated with the first 30 minutes following fertilization. The degree of inhibition at 40 minutes is variable. This variability may be correlated with the length of the lag period and the onset of the maximum uptake rates: if the latter is not established until after the application of DNP at 40 minutes, the inhibition seems to be appreciable; if the maximum rate of uptake.
