Arthritic hand. View of deformed hand due to rheumatoid arthritis gripping a specially designed walking stick. The knuckles (metacarpo phalangeal joints) are swollen and reddened and the fingers are curving away from the thumb side of the hand. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder (one in which the body's own immune system attacks the body tissues); it attacks the joints, especially those of the hands, feet, wrists, arms and hips. Affected joints become swollen, red, warm, painful & stiff. Treatment includes physio- therapy, corticosteriod drugs (anti-inflammatory & immunosuppressant), anti-rheumtoid drugs & joint replacement surgery (arthroplasty).
