Iliac arterial bypass. Coloured angiogram of an arterial bypass (lower frame, S-shaped) between a patient's right and left iliac arteries. The bypass is made from a section of vein, artery or synthetic tubing and allows blood to flow past the severe narrowing in the iliac artery on the right. The large blood vessel at the top is the aorta. This divides in the lower abdomen into the two iliac arteries, which carry blood to the legs. Narrowing of major arteries in the legs is usually caused by atherosclerosis, where fatty deposits build up on the inside wall of an artery. In severe cases this can lead to chronic ulceration, numbness and gangrene in the affected limb.
