The early years of Count Bismarckwere passed at Kniephof, an estate inPomerania, to which his parents hadsucceeded, and which subsequentlycame into his possession. His educa-tion was commenced at Berlin, wherethe family resided in the winter. Itwas conducted at the best schools ofthe city, first at a boarding-school,and afterwards at the Frederick Wil-liam Gymnasium ; and the usual fullcourse of instruction of these establish-ments was sujoplemented by addition-al studies of the modern languages, inwhich he was led by various privatetutors.
