THREE PRINCES- the allegory that portrays Prince Charles in Windsor Three Princes André Durand's celebrated allegory portrays His Royal Highness Prince Charles in Windsor Park, wearing the regalia of a Knight of The Most Noble Order of the Garter mantle astride a white charger. Durand has lavished attention on the mantle, fashioned from deep blue silk velvet lined with white silk taffeta, that enfolds Princes Harry and William, who in stark contrast to their father’s regalia are wearing jeans and baseball caps. The hand embroidered gold badge on the left breast features prominently in Durand’s composition. It displays the cross of St. George, encircled by the motto: “Honi soit qui mal y pense” ‘Dishonoured be he who thinks evil of it’. The allegory was commissioned by the entertainer, George Elrick and Marshall Amplifiers on behalf of the Grand Order of the Water Rats. Durand allegories usually refer to works of art from the past; the artist has based the magnificent charger in Three Princes on the 1488 equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni by Andrea del Verrocchio
