Old and new apartment buildings in the Tiong Bahru district of Singapore.

Old and new apartment buildings in the Tiong Bahru district of Singapore. The low brick buildings date back to before WWII and the colorful highrise behind it is from late 20th century. Singapore’s first housing estate, built in the 1930s to the west of Chinatown, is considered today one of Singapore’s “hippest” districts. The resident demographic remains cosmopolitan -- young and old, gay and straight, foreigners and local residents. and unlike the masses of boxy, modern Housing Development Board flats around Singapore, the Tiong Bahru apartments with their rounded balconies and shuttered windows possess a quaint art deco style.
