Sunflowers for sale at the Market Square (Kauppatori) in Helsinki, Finland. Sunflowers originated in North America and normally grow from 3 to 18 feet tall. The largest sunflower was over 25 feet tall. The head of the sunflower is made of up of hundreds of individual flowers, from which each sunflower seed originates. These sunflower seeds can be either eaten or crushed into oil, which is used for cooking, cosmetics manufacturing, and machinery lubricants. Sunflowers are also known for heliotropism, where the head of the sunflower will follow the sun across the sky each day.
