American shrubs, with alternate petiolate entire Ivs. The fls. are small and inconspicu- ous, tubular, the margin 5-6-lobed ; stamens 7-8, on unequal capillary filaments ; ovary stipitate. Fls. in 3's, each one subtended by a very large colored bract. These bracts are very gaudy, and constitute the decorative value of the plants. Two more or less scandent species are chiefly known in cultivation. Bougainvilleas are just now receiving much attention in this country. glabra, Choisy. Fig. 249. Growing 10-16 ft. high and wide, when planted in the ground and allowed to have its way ; glabrous : Ivs. ovate and acuminate, glabrous and bright green : bracts cordate-ovate, bright rosy red, distinctly veined.
