A dictionary of Greek and Roman . a, the statue of the god ; b b, entrances to thecella from the opisthodomus ; c, apartments for thekeeper of the temple. Every decastyle temple was also hypaethral, butthere were also octastyle and even hexastyle hy-paethral temples. A question has lately been raised whether thereever were any hypaethral temples. The two sidesof the question will be found discussed in the fol-lowing works : Ross, Keine Hypdthraltempel ?nehr,in his Hellenika, pt. i. pp. 1—39, Halle, 1846, 4 to.,and Bbtticher, Der Hypathraltempel, auf Grunddes Vitruvischen Zeugniss

The variations made upon them, especially by the union of two or more temples inone building, were very numerous. (See Hirt,Stieglitz, and the other authorities.) One formdeserves particular notice, inasmuch as it wascertainly very ancient, and some writers havesupposed that it contained the germs of all theother forms ; this was what Vitruvius called theTuscan Temple. (Vitruv. iv. 7.) The passage of TEMPLUM. 1109 Vitruvius is very difficult, and has been differentlyexplained. (Comp. Stieglitz and Hirt.) The fol-lowing engraving is so constructed as to contain arepresentation of the three chief forms, real or sup-posed, of the Tuscan temple.
