Warm air, of course, tends to rise. Therefore, in order to keep the heat where it can be utilized by the plants, the returns should either be under the benches or on the walls, not more than two or three feet from the floor. Ordi- narily we prefer to run the flow pipes downhill, and in order to secure the needed fall for the flow and return pipes we think it well to place the flow pipes for supplying the coils for the walls or side benches on the wall plates, unless the returns are below the top of the heater, in which case the flow may be carried near the ridge. For houses more than ten feet wide, if there is a middle bench for which bottom heat is desired, a flow may be run overhead to supply a center coil, in addition to the flow pipes on the plates. In still wider houses, in which there are four or five benches, other flows may be carried on the purlin posts, or suspended from the purlins.
