Peter's Stone in Winter Shadows

Peter’s Stone is a circular limestone dome (a landslide block of Carboniferous limestone) at northern end of Cressbrook Dale. It is also referred to as Gibbet Rock. (A gibbet was a gallows used to display the bodies of criminals after their execution). The stone apparently obtained its name due to its resemblance the basilica of St Peter's in Rome.
