A large wood gear and gate block the front entrance to the Slitting House at the Saugus Iron Works. The Saugus Iron Works (originally named Hammersmith) is a national historic landmark and part of the National Parks Service since 1968. Upon entering the park visitors are greeted by a beautiful 17th century home. Known as the Iron Works House, it was not part of the original compound. It was built in 1680 after the iron works closed. The house exchanged hands several times before being acquired by the National Parks Service. It is now used as a period museum and gateway to the park. Saugus, Massachusetts USA
