Abused Indonesian domestic helper Erwiana Sulistyaningsih was present at the District Court in Wan Chai, Hong Kong to see her former employer jailed for 6 years. Judge Amanda Woodcock stopped short of the 7 year maximum when sentencing Law Wan-tung. The judge took the time in summary to attack some of the employment conditions that strip domestic workers in Hong Kong of their rights. In a city with a domestic helper base made mainly of Indonesians, Phillippinas and Indians, Judge Woodcock recognised that mandatory live-in service could lead to exploitation, oppression and near slavery.
