Burscough, Lancashire, UK Weather 16th November, 2017. Starling flocks mumurate over Martin Mere nature reserve at dawn as an estimated fifty thousand starlings take to the air after a cold night in rural Lancashire. The onset of winter triggers these mumurations as huge flocks of gregarious birds congregate to find communal roosts. The murmur or chatter, the interaction and communication between birds as they fly, is quite intense. These displays are the largest seen in the last for 12 years and are attracting large numbers of birdwatchers to the area. Credit. MediaWorldImages/AlamyLiveNews

Starling murmurations, where thousands of birds flock together, swirling in the sky at dawn and dusk, are one of the ultimate winter spectacles. During the colder months, up and down the country, hundreds of thousands of starlings darken the sky with these incredible, acrobatic displays on their way to or from their roosts.
