Electrophoresis apparatus. Computer artwork showing the apparatus used to separate DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) fragments using electrophoresis. The technique uses an electric field applied across a gel matrix, which causes the molecules to move different distances along the gel depending on their length. The result is the characteristic bands seen here (bottom centre). It is used to identify the genes present in DNA samples by separating the DNA molecules according to their length but can also be used to separate protein molecules.
