Kentucky was now made a countyof A^irginia, and the first court was held at Ilarrodsburg in1777. In 1792 it was admitted into the Union as a sovereignState, embracing an area of 37,680 square miles, equal to24,115,200 acres. In 1860 its population was 1,155,684, ofwhich 236,167 were colored.
