The definite object of the report, as stated in theintroduction, was to obtain an estimate of the cost andof the output both in teaching and in research in thedepartment of physics in the following institutions: Colum-bia University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Insti-tute of Technology, University of Toronto, University ofWisconsin, Haverford College, Princeton University, andWilliams College. In his preface Dr. Pritchett further states that thedepartment of physics was chosen as the basis of thereport for three reasons: first, because it was believedthat physics considered as an integral branch of collegiateand university education is taught as efficiently as any. A typical Research Laboratory, Physics of Toronto other; second, it includes lecture hall, laboratory and reci-tation room work; and third, because owing to the factthat it is a comparatively modern subject, it has accumu-lated less moss than perhaps attaches to some of thesubjects which have been a regular part of the curriculumfor centuries. The type of organization found in the various univer-sities is classified in the report, broadly, under two heads—the military or one-man management type and the com-mittee type. The physics department of the University ofToronto is classed as the distinct type of military department is administered almost entirely by oneman having the title of director of the laboratory, a dis-tinguished physicist with absolute control of his depart-ment. He had been selected for this place chiefly onaccount of his administrative ability, although his peda-gogical and scientific attainments are
