Naturally they believed themselves in the grip ofanother enemy; but just then an officer in blue made hisappearance. A hasty explanation was made, and he wasinformed that if he withdrew his men, there was good chanceof capturing a few rebels. Quickly acting on this suggestion,he placed his force in the woods; then, on their being orderedto surrender, the pursuing body made a bold fight, but weresoon overcome, and so it happened that some twenty-fiveprisoners were taken into camp. Meanwhile the two scouts from the Nineteenth wereriding toward Huntsville, but it was close on to midnight.
