Pyxis in the name of al-Mughira 9th - 10th Century AD Spain, Cordoba Ivory, carved and engraved decoration This box was made for the youngest son of the Caliph 'Abd al-Rahman III. No doubt offered by its supporters to its majority, it presents unpublished scenes: collecting hawk eggs, picking dates. It is a series of key images: the first umayyade of Spain, arrived in Cordoba in 756, was called by his Abbassid rivals, the "Quraysh falcon". The palm tree is another symbol of this dynasty driven from the East.
