The spiral ligament (fig. 400, Lsp) appears in section as a tri-angular prominence attached to the outer waU of the cochlea, with thebasilar membrane prolonged from its apex. It is composed of a retiformconnective tissue, many of the cells of which have an elongated shapeand radiate from the point of attachment of the basilar have been considered by some to be muscular, but there is nodistinct proof of their contractile nature.
